Hello team,

It's the moment we've all been waiting for -- the kickball Final Four! We are matched up with the top-seeded Monkeys and are slated to play them tomorrow, Aug. 1 at 6:40 p.m. Depending upon the outcome of that game, we would play a second game at 7:20 against the winner of the Kids Who Can't Read Good/Ball Busters game for the championship. Fields will be set up at 7th street again.

It's been a while since we last played, but there is still more kickball to be played. There are two regular season games left, tomorrow and next Monday, and then we have the playoffs after that.

Postponed Game: Tuesday, 6/27 @ 6:40 p.m.

It was a tough week for sports fans this week as the Donkies suffered a one-point loss to the Gators in kickball and Team USA lost by a point to Ghana in the World Cup. But unlike Team USA, we are still in this! We dropped to second place in the standings, but our team plays better with a chip on our shoulder and next week we can return to form against our WAKA rivals, Kids Who Can't Read Good. Game time is 6:40 on Tuesday and it is our team's turn to squat (hold the fields) . Kara has graciously volunteered to do so, so the earlier you all can get there to help her fend off pesky softballers, the better. You know the drill - let me know if you'll be there.

We are alone in first place with a 5-1 record, but this week's game against Kickin Gators at 7:25 p.m. tomorrow, should be a challenge. Although they're a new team, they're 4-2 and were able to knock off We Kick Balls, the team we lost to, with a score of 8-2. Please let me know if you will make it and if you'd be able to ref the early game at 6:40 (preferably someone who hasn't reffed yet this year). Thanks.

Upset Of The Century!

Against all odds we upset the first place and only undefeated team in the league, Kicking Balls and Taking Names, 4-3, thanks to some key plays from our rookies - most notably Adrian's 3 run home-run and Kara's excellent fielding. The victory was especially sweet because they beat us in the fall and because of their fiesty first baseman who almost went to blows with several of our players last year and AJ yesterday. We still have some work to do in flipcup, but way to go team!

Just a reminder, there are no kickball games next week because of Memorial Day, so the next Independence event is the 80's prom midseason party on June 3rd at McFadden's. 80's outfits are not required but are encouraged! Our next kickball game will be June 6 against Naughty Little Monkeys at 7:25.

The kickball gods did not favor us last week in kickball or flip cup and this week won't be any easier as we are facing the first place and only undefeated team in the league, Kicking Balls and Taking Names. It is another early game (6:40 p.m.) and for those of you that weren't there last week or haven't been paying attention, the fields are now located on the mall near 7th street. The closest metro stops are L'Enfant Plaza and Smithsonian. Please plan some extra time into your travel so that we have our full lineup at the start of the game. I know that we will be missing a bunch of players this week, so please try to make the game if you can and let me know if you plan to do so. Week 3: Tuesday, 5/16 @ 6:40 p.m. (New Field Location)

So last week was a bust as the Park Police ruined all the fun, but this week it's on like donkey kong!

We have the early game against We Kick Balls tomorrow at 6:40 p.m. Please note that we'll be playing the rest of our kickball games this season on the mall, near 7th street. This is the same spot where the preseason pickup game was held and where we played last season. We'll try to set up right at 7th street, on the Washington Monument side of 7th. If we aren't exactly at 7th street, we'll be close so walk down the mall and look for people with kickball shirts that say Independence Division on the back. A great way to start off the season with a BIG W over the Ball Busters… For those who are new to the donkies this is just a small taste of what’s coming this season…

I was stopped by Joanne, one of the Kids Who Cant Read Good (who pulled down a W also) and she just wanted to express her love for the team, so I thought Id pass it along… Next time you see Joanne make sure you thank her for her love and devotion for the donkies

Week 1: Tuesday, 4/25 @ 7:25 p.m.

Today's Game 1 match-up against the Ball Busters is still on for 7:25 p.m. on 17th & Constitution, despite the forecast for rain (we usually play rain or shine, unless it's a thunderstorm). Should there be a question about game cancellation, a message will be posted at 703-624-2798 with updated information.

As part of our weekly requirement, we need one volunteer from our team to ref the early game at 6:45. Everyone should try to ref at least one game, so please respond to me if you would like to fill your quota.

Finally, here are the directions to the field:

If you're metro-ing, you'll either get off at Smithsonian or one of the Farragut stops. For Smithsonian take the Indpendence Ave. exit and walk down Indpendence Ave towards 17th street. There will be a ranger station surrounded by trees on the right side of Independence Ave, just before you get to 17th street. The fields will be set up somewhere near the ranger station. For Farragut, walk down 17th street towards to the mall until you're almost to Independence ave. You should see the ranger station on the left side of 17th street.

If you're driving, I'd recommend trying to find a parking space near the Exchange and walking from there.

Pickup Game/Pre-season Party 4/18

Hello team,

Our kickball season is just around the corner so I thought I should share some fun facts with you all. Our league's Preseason Party is 8 p.m. on Tues, April 18th in the basement of the Irish Times where there will be all-you-can-drink beer for $5 ($10 for non-league members). There will also be a pickup game on the mall, near 7th st. NW, preceeding the party at 6:30 p.m., which will give us a chance to get acquainted and go over rules and such. Also, our full league schedule has been posted on http://www.kickball.com/ (navigate to DC Independence League and click the schedule and results tab). Our first official game is Tues, 4/25 against the Ball Busters at 7:25 p.m. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks.

Kickball 2006

Hello Kickballers!

February marks the beginning of Kickball registration for Spring 2006. We haven't yet been given intructions from our new President, Doug Blair (the ref who ended our season last year), but Dori and I will be in communication with him and will let you know as soon as we find out.

The season doesn't start until the first week of April. But we will be returning to the DC Independence League and aim to play on Tuesday evenings on the mall (6:40 p.m. and 7:25 p.m. game times). After our miserable experience at Porter's, we will also thankfully return to the Xchange for post-game celebrations.

I have been getting several inquries about adding new players to our championship team. I'm sure we will have some extra spots, but we first want to accomodate our existing players, so please respond to me via email or post directly to our blog site at http://donkieskickball.blogspot.com to let me know whether or not you plan on playing this Spring. Also, please let me know if you have any ideas for our revolving team name.

Game 6 Recap: 3-2-1 Donkies

Our kickball season is looking eerily similar to the Washington Nationals - we started out leading the division and are now out of the race for first because of back to back one-run losses. And now even though we won't finish first in the division, we can still make some noise in the playoffs (okay so maybe our outlook is a little better than the Nats since everyone makes the kickball playoffs).

Yesterday, we lost to "Kicking Balls and Taking Names" 0-1 in kickball and 2-3 in flipcup. We had yet another run called back during the game, but this team was actually pretty good so the sting of losing didn't hurt as bad as it did when we lost to the geezer team. Our record is now 3-2-1 in kickball and 18-11 in flipcup.

We have two games left before the playoffs, one against "Beard of Zeus" at 6:30 p.m. on 9/27 and the other against "NCI Ballers" at 6:30 p.m. on 10/4. Two people will have to ref the late game on 9/27 and then we will have fulfilled our duties for the season (provided we remember to bring the equipment next Tuesday).

Unfortunately I won't be at either of the last two games, so let our co-captains Richard and Brett know your availability prior to gamedays.

Good luck and remember to BUNT if the other team has a solid outfield and to use TWO HANDS in flip cup!

Game 5 Recap: 40 Ounce Shmounce

So we underestimated the geezer team, which unveiled a second unit of young players who were halfway decent. We also underestimated the propensity of referees to make the worst calls EVER. Nevertheless, we put in a good effort and nearly tied the game at the end, but came up 1 run short. Next week we will be put to the test again as we are slated to play "Kicking Balls and Taking Names" at 7:15 on the same field (Field 3). This is a top three team that beat the geezer team, so we will have our work cut out for us. We will need 2 volunteers to ref. the 6:30 game next week, which is coincidentally 40 Ounce Bounce's game.

p.s. Don't forget about the Midseason Party this Friday at Tom Tom's in Adams Morgan (2333 18th Street NW). Free beer starts flowing at 7:00 p.m. and goes until 11:30 p.m. (or until the beer runs out). Cover is $5 for DC-Waterfront members and $15 for non-members.

Game 4 Recap: Still in first place

According to the website, the Steptoe Brew-crew was the only other undefeated team going into last night's games (f'ing evil lawyers), but it looks like they lost last night. Thus, the Donkies remain alone atop the Waterfront division. Tight.

Game 3 Recap

Congrats on a hard fought victory yesterday. Although we had a depleted roster and inadequate footwear, we managed to come from behind and take over the game in true donkey style. Down 3-2 in the first three innings, we evened the score in the fourth and scored 3 more runs in the fifth inning.

Much props go to all the girls on our team, who stepped up big and made some terrific defensive plays down the stretch. MVP award for this game goes to Michelle for her incredible catch in the final play of the game to prevent a tie and seal the victory. Honoroble mention goes to Katie for an equally magnificent catch at right field in the fourth inning.

Other highlights: The Chick-Fil-A play of the day goes to Scott for his diving scoop and one-armed toss-out at first. Unsung hero award goes to Robyn, whose unveiling of "D" was an X-factor both on the kickball field and at Porter's. I also got to hand it to Lurch who redeemed himself at the flipcup table after not showing up to the game. His patented sit-down strategy helped our team SWEEP the Portapottys 5-0.

Our record know stands at 3-0 in kickball and 9-6 in flipcup. Let's keep up our winning ways next week against "Wasted Government Resources." The game is at 6:30 again, but we will need two volunteers to ref. one of the games at 7:15.
